Addiction: Learning to Obey Myself

A key element in addictive behavior is lack of discipline. If you are struggling with addiction one of the most helpful things you can learn to do is to obey yourself. For example, if you tell yourself that you are going to clean up your space and pay the bills before you go for a walk on the beach then that’s what you do. Obeying yourself helps you trust yourself. It helps you feel more secure because you know that there is at least one person in your life that you can depend upon…you. If you are soft on yourself, self indulgent, lazy, or allow your emotions to manipulate you then your are easily lost and overwhelmed. All discipline can be lost and that’s when you resort to your addiction. So, here is a new rule you can make for yourself. Set healthy boundaries and do the things you don’t want to do first. This will build your character and give you a sense of security. There is a lot for you to learn but this step is so important. And remember, my friend, take baby steps. Little by little you will build a new life. It all happens in baby steps.
