In regards to his belief in God Joseph Campbell was asked the question, “Do you have faith?” Campbell answered, “I don’t need faith. I have experience.” When I was twelve years old I asked my minister grandfather to tell me the difference between an agnostic and an atheist. When he finished telling me I responded by telling him that I was agnostic. I said I wanted to have the experience of God. That moment began a lifetime journey to have the experience of God. I believe that Joseph Campbell was on the same journey. I don’t know what he experienced to confirm his belief in God but I know that he must have had an experience that touched him to the core of his being. Those individuals who have had what is commonly called a near death experience report having the experience of God. They, too, have been touched to the core of their beings. They report having a knowledge that erased any fear of death and gave them great comfort. I do believe that one can have an experience that transcends the ordinary and allows you to have a connection with and the experience of the divine.
